China's research-chemical sector developed alongside the country's broader chemical industry, which was established during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and expanded rapidly after 1949. Early state-supported institutes—such as the Shenyang Research Institute of Chemical Industry, founded in 1949—helped build national capacity in fine chemicals, agrochemicals, dyes, intermediates, and laboratory research.

From the late 1970s onward, economic reforms, industrial investment, and export-oriented manufacturing accelerated growth. China became especially strong in producing basic chemicals and chemical intermediates; by 2022, it accounted for roughly 44% of global chemical production, while its share of global chemicals R&D also grew substantially.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Chinese suppliers increasingly entered the international market for specialty compounds, analytical standards, building blocks, and other materials sold for legitimate laboratory research. At the same time, the term “research chemicals” acquired a controversial meaning because some vendors marketed unapproved psychoactive substances or drug precursors online. This led to stronger domestic and international investigations, including criminal cases involving companies alleged to have supplied fentanyl-related precursors and other controlled or dangerous substances.

Today, China remains a major source of chemical manufacturing and scientific supply, but the sector is shaped by tighter regulation, export controls, quality-assurance expectations, and concerns over misuse.
